During the planning of the Museum Building, we decided to include an area for model trains. This was due in large part to an impressive donation of over 30 boxes from the late Bernie Jern.
A few years before the construction started, the Jern Family donated Bernie's collection which is made up of diferent guage models and displays, but mostly made of the "HO" scale. Bernie Jern was a former engineer for the Burlington Northern Railroad and had a true passion for model railroading. Over time he had put together quite a large collection.
As with all of the artifacts and memoribilia we receive, we do not want to forget any of the gracious families and individuals that have donated items over the years, without them we would not exist. There have been a few others that have donated or loaned model trains to display, including a couple of our current and former Board members. We are most thankful to them all.
With such a growing collection, we made a train board to show some of the models, both static and running. The work-in-progress train board doesn't really reflect any certain layout or destination, but does show both "HO" and "N" guages. Currently, plans are in the works to build a scene to include a model of the 1950's era Burlington Route depot in Galesburg.
Next time you are in for a visit, ask the attendant to turn on the trains. Sorry, this is a hands off exhibit. Hope you enjoy!
