MADELINE KAY (CLAYTON) BEHRENS - Madeline Kay -the youngest daughter of Clifford and Eunice B. (Andrews) Clayton was born Monmouth. Illinois on August 2, 1946. She has six brothers and two sisters. They are: Arnold, Charles, Richard, Melvin, Bonnie, Maurine, Carl Dean and James. She spent her childhood in Monmouth and attended Harding Grade School, Central junior High and graduated in 1964 from Monmouth High School.
During high school she was employed by F. Woolworth and was a member of Rainbow Girls. She was a member of the Ninth Avenue Presbyterian Church.
Upon graduation, she moved to Davenport, to attend American Institute of Commerce. In 1966, she started her working career at Nichols home shield as an aluminum products production manager.
In fall 1968 she went to work for WOC broadcasting Company (Davenport) as a Traffic manager for the radio station division. In spring 1969, she enrolled at Palmer Junior College and earned an Associate Degree in Communications,
In 1971 she left the broadcast industry to become the Media Buyer for Advertising Communications. Inc. (Davenport. IA).
In fall 1975, she began her shopping center career with General Growth Companies (a Des Moines, IA based shopping center developer) at Duck creek Plaza (Bettendorf, Iowa) as Marketing director.
In fall 1977, she additionally became the Marketing Director of Northpark Mall (Davenport IA), In spring 1981 she was promoted to Assistant Manager of Northpark Mall and in summer 1982 she returned Duck Creek Plaza as General Manager.
Spring of 1983 took her to Des Moines, IA corporate office, as a Regional Marketing Director
She headed west to Woodland Hills. California as General Manager of Fallbrook Mall, April 1986. .
In fall 1989. she returned to the Midwest as General Manager of South Park Mall (Moline, Illinois) to head up the renovation/expansion. In spring 1990 she was promoted to the position of Group Manager of four properties (Moline, Ill Bettendorf, IA Davenport IA Cedar Rapids, IA.)
In fall 1992, she relocated to Minneapolis, Minneapolis corporate office as Senior Vice President of Marketing Services. Tiring of the Minnesota snow, she was off to sunny Florida to open West Oaks Mall, Ocoee, FL Orlando) in May 1996.
During her shopping center career she earned the designations of CMD (Certified Marketing Director) and CSM (Certified Shopping Manager).
November 9, 1972, she married Rodney Erwin Behrens, from Bennett, Iowa. She and Rodney had one daughter, Brooke Elizabeth Behrens, born June 5, 1977. She and Rodney were divorced May 10, 1979.
Brooke enjoyed her many relocation's with her mom and attended Schools in Bettendorf, IA, Des Moines, IA, Los Angeles, CA, Pleasant Valley, IA and graduated in 1995 from Minnetonka High School, Minnetonka, MN. Brooke works for AT&T Wireless and resides in Eden Prairie, Minnesota
Kay was engaged to Bill Shell (from Pontiac, MI) in fall of 1992. Bill is a retired Detroit Police Officer and is employed by the State of Florida Juvenile Justice Department and Phoenix University.
Kay is active in many community and professional organizations. She served as the PR Director for the Miss Iowa Pageant and Quad City St. Patrick's Society.
In Florida, she is an active Rotarian, West Orange Chamber of Commerce Member (Chairman of the Board 2001, Boys and Girls Club Board Member, Committee of 101 Board Member, WOPA Board Member and the Health Central Hospital Foundation Board.
