Jim gained employment as a switchman on December 22, 1962 with Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (merged Burlington Northern Railroad June 1970-merged again Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad September 1995). He was promoted to yardmaster October 1968 to April 1977 and promoted to conductor June 3 of 1989. Galesburg Terminal employees selected him as "Employee of the Month (April-June) 1997." Retirement came on January 31, 2002 after 39 years of service.
Jim and Bev were married March 17, 1963 in Galesburg, Illinois at the First Lutheran Church.
They have a daughter, Jamie Ann (Clayton) Wollrab, granddaughter, Amanda Wollrab and grandson, Andrew Wollrab and a son, James Clifford Clayton (his wife, Megan) and step-grandson, Matt Lenz.
