Artifacts and Memorabilia
The museum began when J. Patrick Reed, a former Burlington Route brakeman/conductor, displayed his personal railroad artifacts in the old depot’s baggage room. Over the years, hundreds of donors have contributed artifacts, books, photographs, and even working steam engine models. Visitors can see lanterns, tools, uniforms, and decorative china, all meticulously organized in display cases. These collections showcase the incredible legacy of railroading in Galesburg.

CB&Q 1945 RPO
Experience a post office on wheels! The CB&Q 1945 RPO carried mail on passenger trains, sorted by trained railway postal clerks traveling up to 80 MPH. This historic car also included a baggage section and a Railway Express Agency compartment, handling everything from passenger luggage to cream cans and valuable shipments. It played a key role in moving mail efficiently before the advent of trucks and planes.
The 3006 Locomotive
The CB&Q engine 3006, a Hudson Class S-4 4-6-4 steam locomotive built in 1930, logged over 2.3 million miles in freight and passenger service. Donated to the city in 1962, it’s maintained by the museum and powered trains that carried mail and passengers across the region. Visitors can admire its massive tender, coal stoker, and intricate steam-driven machinery.
Burlington Route 13501 Waycar
TThe NE 10-class steel caboose, built in 1930, was home and office to conductors and brakemen, featuring a cupola for train observation, bunks, a desk, and a coal stove for cooking. Visitors also see track inspection motor cars and historic mechanical crossing signals, which helped maintain safe train operations over decades.
The Fagan Reading Room
Named after benefactor Marilyn Jo Fagan, this quiet space houses historic railroad documents and memorabilia. The room preserves the stories of railroading families and highlights the museum’s mission to educate and honor railroad history. Access to the reference collection will likely be by appointment.
The MEMORIAL
The Memorial at the Galesburg Railroad Museum was dedicated on Labor Day in 2000 to honor railroad workers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Designed by fourth-generation railroader Doug Traff, the monument features a concrete base topped with a tall black granite obelisk. The memorial serves as a place of remembrance and reflection, honoring the sacrifices and contributions of railroad workers who helped build the railroad industry and the Galesburg community.
The PULLMAN Meath
This Pullman parlor car, once used to house the museum’s collection, reflects the elegance of historic rail travel. It showcases how passengers experienced comfort and style during the golden era of railroads.
Commemorative Brick Walkway
Walk along engraved bricks honoring donors and supporters who helped fund the museum. This pathway represents the community’s commitment to preserving railroad history.
